Poems by Gurudev

Verses written by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar — quiet reflections on love, longing, and the journey homeward.

I Promise

If I had to promise you something, what would it be?

I can't promise that you would always be comfortable…
Because comfort brings boredom and discomfort.

I can't promise that all your desires will be fulfilled…
Because desires, whether fulfilled or unfulfilled, bring frustration.

I can't promise that there will always be good times…
Because it is the tough times that make us appreciate joy.

I can't promise that we will be rich or famous or powerful…
Because they can all be pathways to misery.

I can't promise that we will always be together…
Because it is separation that makes togetherness so wonderful.

Yet, if you are willing to walk with me,
If you are willing to value love over everything else ~

I promise that this will be the most rich and fulfilling life possible.
I promise your life will be an eternal celebration.
I promise you I will cherish you more than a king cherishes his crown,
And I shall love you more than a mother loves her newborn.

If you are willing to walk into my arms,
If you are willing to live in my heart,
You will find the one you have waited forever…
You will meet yourself in my arms…

I promise.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Come to Me

Beyond the heaven is my abode…

Come to me, come to me.
Don't stop, come to me.

If you get stuck in the heaven,
you will return back from there to hell.
Don't stop in the heaven, come to me, come to me.

My abode is beyond heaven, far away from here.
Come to me, come to me.

All the charming faces, boys and girls, eyes and noses,
hairs and dresses, cookies and sweets and chocolates,
pass them on.

Smiling and dancing, come to me, come to me.
My abode is beyond the heaven, come to me.

Joyfully move in this direction, a thousand blessings on the way,
walk through them, don't get stuck.
Pass through them, come to me.

Angels are ready to serve you, and crown you with the highest.
Don't stop before that.

Come to me, come to me…

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

You Never Know

You never know how and when…

You never know
How and when
The existence will start
using you for its purpose.

You never know
How and when
you will be filled with abundance
and you will start raining,
quenching the thirst of many.

You never know
How and when
you will be full of
fruits and shade,
and travellers will take
shelter and food from you.

You never know
How and when
you will be full with
love and light,
and you will start spreading
the fragrance of beauty to everyone.

You never know
How and when
death will come
and make you deathless,
and life will start
flowing out of you.

You never know how and when… Really!

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

You and Me

Words are too small to convey the truth…

Yet they can trigger the flames of wisdom,
shower comfort on the intense longing,
raise cheers of joy and make you know
I treasure your love for me.

Like god his creation,
the root its trunk —
unknown, unheard, unseen,
in the silent chamber of heart.

I am in you as you,
You are in me as me!

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Where There Is No Other

I know not how to thank you…

You're truly a part of me.
With me every moment,
together at every step are we.

On the inner stage,
consciousness dances unfazed.
Formless takes form,
the cosmic creation stands amazed.

Stage and dancer merge into one,
so do the seer and the scenery,
the speaker and the audience,
the Master and the devotee.

This is the only truth.
The rest is Maya's cover.

Whom to thank here,
where there is no other.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

The Inner Light

The world goes round, always has, always will…

But you can be centred — let go and become still.
Turn your vision from the scenery you are seeing,
close your eyes and realize, you are that Being.

In the hustle bustle outside, do not miss,
deep within your heart is a fountain of bliss.
It has always been there, just covered by a veil —
a joy that remains ever fresh, never goes stale.

It's merely out of ignorance that people fight;
differences drop effortlessly on seeing the inner light.

Of all Nature's forces, love binds the universe;
what is built will perish; what has come will be gone.
Our Spirit is eternal — will continue to live on.

On this colourful path, we sing, dance, laugh and meditate.
Established in wisdom, all gets done and we simply celebrate.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

New Year's Eve — In Passing Lockdown

As the clock ticked in the midnight…

Fireworks flashed through the sky.
Explosions heard everywhere —
not to wake up,
but to put people into intoxicants.

Drums fell on deaf ears
for the lame to dance on the darkest hour.
The end relished, the beginning perished
without a sense of ownership.

The lonely New Year sun rose quietly —
only empty streets to watch its glory and beauty.
A deadly silence spoke in volumes
of the time that we are in now.

A ray of hope pierced through the earth,
looked for the values deep hidden.

The majestic Eagle kept wondering —
if man would ever learn new ways of celebration.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

It's All You

Oh, Dear, this creation is a celebration of Thy presence.

I see You in the leaves, in the petals,
in the stem, and in the thorn,
and in the unseen roots.

It's all You and You and You,
nothing but You.

Whether the bark or the thorn,
the roots or the mud —
Your face is reflected,
smiling and dancing and laughing and singing.

It's all You, it's all You, it's all You.

In tears of joy, in tears of sorrow, alike —
You play, You dance, You sing,
and You celebrate.

It's all You, it's all You, it's all You.

For each glorifies the other.
Everything in this creation glorifies
everything else.
Clapping your own hands together,
you rejoice in my presence.

It's all You, it's all You, it's all You.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Look Into the Eyes of the Divine

…and see whether or not.

Look into the eyes of the Divine and see —
does love shine in them for you, or not.

Take a step forward but once and see —
whether you find your path, or not.

Reach out to help others and see —
whether your work is accomplished, or not.

Smile with love but once and see —
whether the world embraces you, or not.

Take the Divine's name but once and see —
whether your life becomes a celebration, or not.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Just Be

Just be.

True joy is going beyond your identity.

Real rest is going beyond your desires.

Mature love is feeling the oneness.

Relax — and just be.

Events are transitory —
pick up the wisdom and be free.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Dance in the Rain

Every rainy season in your life has touched you deeply…

…inside somewhere; it has made you grow, given you strength.
Rains bring a rainbow; they stream colours into your life.
And you come out as gold.

Peacocks wait for the rain.
When they see dark clouds gathering
they open their brilliant feathers.
And when it rains, they dance so beautifully!

When dark clouds gather, the end has not come.
You will pass through this time.

As you are passing through it,
there are two ways you can experience it —
either you can groan and cry and pass through it,
or you can sing and dance through it.

And when you can sing and dance in the rain,
you will get so soaked in joy.

— Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
